Full Moon Rituals for Beginners
The days when the moon is most full can be an intense and emotional time of each month. Learning how to work with the monthly lunar cycle, and especially with full moon rituals, can be a powerful experience for anyone seeking renewed connection to their sense of self and the world around them.
From choosing the right location and time for your full moon ritual, to creating an altar or sacred space, gathering supplies, and setting intentions; we'll give you everything you need to get started in celebrating this powerful phase of the lunar cycle.
When the bright light of the full moon shines down upon us, it asks us to pause and reflect on the abundance within each of our lives, and also release what no longer serves us. Connected to the new moon in lunar cycles that are typically around twenty-eight to thirty days, this moon phase shows us all the growth and expansion we have created for ourselves, and encourages us to be grateful for all we have.
Drawing inspiration from Native American full moon rituals and many indigenous cultures around the world, this monthly practice is a great way to connect the energy of the natural world and your own personal power. There are many different ways to celebrate the full moon, but here we will focus on a simple full moon ritual that you can easily incorporate into your routine each month from now on. Enjoy!
Getting Started with Full Moon Rituals
Whether you are looking for a full moon ritual to manifest love, or full moon rituals for letting go, we recommend gathering the following supplies to get started. You will be able to find most of these around your home already, and nothing is a requirement. For your first full moon ritual, work with what you have and move with your inner voice and intuition.
Cleansing tool, such as sage, palo santo, or selenite from an ethically sourced company like Whispering Wind Shop
Safe burning vessel, such as a large metal bucket
Matches or lighter
Pen & paper or journal
Candle, such as Blossom & Stone’s Crystal-Infused Candles
Bowl of clean water, and you can add flowers or essential oils to this if you would like
Crystal of choice, such as amethyst or aquamarine for releasing, and Citrine or green aventurine for abundance
Advice for a Simple Full Moon Ritual
Now that you’ve gathered the supplies for your personal full moon ritual, you are ready to begin. We recommend using a website like timeanddate.com to find the exact time when the full moon will peak in your current location. Before you get started, here are a few more tips for full moon rituals for beginners:
Ideally, this full moon ritual should be performed outside under the moon, but it can also be practiced indoors in an area that is clean and clutter-free.
If you have an altar, try moving things around or replacing any pieces that may feel stagnant.
Do some research on the specific lunar cycle and try to incorporate some elements to represent the astrological sign the moon is currently in. For example, if it’s a fire sign, light a candle, and for an earth sign maybe bring in a plant or some wild flowers.
The best time to manifest during a full moon is the exact time it reaches fullness, when the energy is most potent.
If you have the time, create a full moon bath ritual with epsom salt, essential oils, or flowers to release any unwanted energy from your system.
FULL MOON RITUAL FOR LETTING GO
Settle into the space for your full moon ritual. Using either a smudging tool or selenite, clear the energy around you and the area you are in. Light your candle.
Close your eyes and take a few minutes to clear your mind and focus on your breath. You can also listen to my favorite Full Moon Healing meditation to tap deeper into the energy of your full moon ritual.
With your mind now clear, take a few minutes to write down on a piece of paper any thoughts or feelings that came up during the meditation. Any negative beliefs or blocks? Anything you want to let go of?
Now read what you wrote out loud. Let the words settle in.
Carefully light the paper on fire and let it burn in your contained vessel. As you watch the paper burn, think or say out loud, “I release all that holds me back. I let go of all that does not serve me.” Repeat as needed or until the paper is completely turned to ash.
Pick up your crystal, hold it at your heart center. Close your eyes and take a few deep inhales and exhales. As you exhale, visualize all old and stagnant energy releasing off your body.
Say a small prayer of thanks to the Universe and the energy of the full moon.
Blow out your candle to close the full moon ritual.
FULL MOON RITUAL TO MANIFEST LOVE & ABUNDANCE
Settle into the space for your full moon ritual. Using either a smudging tool or selenite, clear the energy around you and the area you are in.
Take a few d eep breaths and allow yourself to relax. Use this time to connect with your intentions for the full moon ritual – what do you hope to achieve? Focus on your breathing and let all other thoughts fall away.
When you are ready, bring your hands together, as though in a full moon prayer. Visualize yourself surrounded by light and the divine energy of the moon. Fill your palms with this light. Feel it flowing through you, filling you with a sense of peace and tranquility.
Take in a large breath of air, filling your body up with cleansing energy. On your exhale, say out loud, “I am abundant.” Repeat the breath cycle, but as you exhale, say out loud, “I am grateful.” Repeat the breath cycle one more time, and this time say, “I am deserving of love.” Continue this pattern multiple times until you feel aligned and connected to the mantras.
When you are ready, open your eyes and take a few minutes to list all of the things in your life you are grateful for. Big or small, write down as many as you can. If you created intentions during the last new moon, you can also reflect on those and journal on your growth.
Now read what you wrote out loud. Let the words settle in.
Pick up your chosen crystal and hold it at your heart center. Close your eyes and take a few deep inhales and exhales. As you exhale, visualize all your gratitudes and take their energy into your body.
When you are ready, open your eyes and place your hands in the bowl of water.
Say out loud as many times as you like “I am worthy of all I desire”. As you repeat this mantra, you can alternate placing your hands on your chest, head or face. Feel the cool water on your skin.
When you are ready, place your hands in prayer and say, “And so it is,” to close your full moon ritual.
